No Mother of The Bride??

No Mother to be there by your side?

Due to many reasons, some brides may find themselves organising their engagement and wedding plans without a mother.  The role of mother-of-the-bride is often seen as a critical one, and if you are missing that, you may feel anxious, empty or self-conscious.  This is a huge time in your life that you will probably reflect back & wish your mother was by your side.

As you are meeting your fiancé’s friends and family at various wedding events, you may encounter questions about your mother.  There is no need to be embarrassed or, even, overly-sensitive regarding an absentee or deceased parent.  Most questions will just be curiosity, and certainly not meant with any malicious intent.  Keep your replies simple and direct. If you or your mother made a decision for her not to be involved in your life, give a response like, “My mother won’t be joining us for the wedding.”  If your mother is deceased, handle it the way you have undoubtedly answered the questions before with a brief statement, such as, “My mother passed away.” Remember this is meant to be the happiest day of your life & your mother would have wanted to see you smile endlessly. She may not be there by your side but she is there in memory & watching your every emotion on your special day.

Feel free to select an “adopted” MOB.  If you would like to have the support of an older woman during this very emotional and busy time, it is totally understandable.  Ask a relative you have a close relationship with, or a family friend.  Also, if you are very close to the MOG, ask her if she would like to fill in on traditional MOB tasks and honors. Others may choose their brother or sister someone that they feel very close to & would love to share this moment with you.

A bride who loved her mother cannot help but wish she could be there to play a part in this special event in their life. While a loved one cannot always be there in person, it is possible to honor them in spirit. Some couples do this with a candle ceremony, some with words. Here are two examples for you to consider:

“Welcome. Thank you for being here today. Jason and Samantha are thrilled that you could be here to share their most special day with them. They would also like to acknowledge those who could not be here but would have loved to share in this occasion, particularly Samantha’s mother, Sarah.”

“Welcome everyone. We appreciate that you’ve come from near and far to join us for this joyful ceremony. Marianne and David, you wish to remember both family and friends who cannot be with us in person today, and loved ones who have passed away. You hold their memories close to your hearts today and always. The bouquet of flowers on the altar is composed of one flower symbolizing each of these cherished people.”

Whether you use words, candles, flowers or moment of silence, the moment of remembrance is what affirms the connection. On a day when two hearts join, it can be important to make sure both hearts are focused on love.
